Balboa Park

Botanical Buidling

The Botanical Building at Balboa Park in San Diego is one of the most iconic structures in all of San Diego, known for its stunning architecture and lush plant collections.

21,000

Plant Species

This includes tropical, subtropical, and lush foliage plants, as well as seasonal flower displays.

110

Year Old Structure

The Botanical Building was built for the 1915-1916 Panama-California Exposition, which celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and showcased San Diego as a key port of entry.

50 million

Visitors Since Original Construction

Balboa Park welcomes over 14 million visitors annually, with the Botanical Building being one of its iconic free-access landmarks

Coast's Contribution

Originally tasked with removing and salvaging existing plant material, the city of San Diego quickly realized that more needed to be done to the building and Coast Landscaping Inc. became the landscape contractor to source, replant and irrigate the entire building.

Back to Life

Updating a 100+ year old building is a group effort and we were happy to work with EC Constructors , Spurlock Landscape Architects and Designer Nan Sternman along with the City os San Diego, designers and architects to see this project cross the finish line.

Old Meets New

Coast Landscaping not only planted new plants but we removed and kept alive existing plant material some of which was over 60 years old.

Along with the landscape designer & consultant we placed and oriented every single plant with a visitor in mind.
