Pacific Highlands Ranch Branch Library: A Vision for the Future

The Pacific Highlands Ranch Branch Library is a transformative City of San Diego project, designed to serve the growing community with a state-of-the-art, 18,000-square-foot facility. This new library is more than just a place for books; it features specialized spaces for adults, teens, and children, along with study rooms, a computer area, and a community meeting space complete with a catering kitchen. Outdoor patio reading areas and stunning public artwork by San Diego artist Janelle Iglesias further enhance the experience, creating a space that honors the land’s history and languages.

Bringing Green Spaces to Life

Coast Landscaping was proud to contribute to the Pacific Highlands Ranch Branch Library by enhancing the grounds with thoughtful and sustainable landscaping. Our scope of work included:

Installation of an advanced irrigation system and planting over 6,500 plants and 40 trees.

Precision placement of 13 massive 60” box trees and 8 towering 16’ BTH palm trees.

This project wasn’t without its challenges. Coordination with other trades and City officials was essential to ensure the safe and accurate placement of the larger trees and palms. Despite these complexities, our team completed the landscape portion on time and within the allocated budget of $550k.

Navigating Challenges, Delivering Excellence

Every project has its hurdles, and this was no exception. The size and scale of the 60” box trees and 16’ palms required seamless coordination with contractors EC Contractors and Soltek Pacific, as well as precise equipment handling and scheduling.

Our year-long involvement brought us unique challenges but also tremendous rewards. Seeing the completed library surrounded by lush, carefully curated landscaping is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our team. The green spaces will serve as a welcoming, peaceful retreat for the community for years to come.

Precision in Motion – Moving Large Trees into Place

One of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of the Pacific Highlands Ranch Branch Library project was the precise relocation and placement of the larger trees. Coast Landscaping’s team expertly handled the transportation and installation of 13 massive 60” box trees and 8 towering 16’ BTH palm trees, each weighing thousands of pounds.

This process required meticulous planning and coordination with general contractors EC Contractors and Soltek Pacific, as well as other trades on-site. Our team used specialized equipment to lift and position each tree, ensuring the root systems and trunks were handled with care to avoid damage. The large trees were then strategically placed to enhance the library’s design and provide shade, character, and a sense of permanence to the outdoor spaces.

Safety was our top priority during every step of the process. From navigating tight schedules to managing heavy machinery, our team demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication to ensure that every tree was securely installed and thriving in its new home. These majestic trees now stand as living landmarks, creating a welcoming, green environment for the community to enjoy for years to come.

Landscaping that Lasts

The Pacific Highlands Ranch Branch Library isn’t just a building—it’s a community centerpiece that embodies sustainability and connection. Coast Landscaping played a pivotal role in bringing this vision to life by sourcing and planting over 6,500 plants designed to thrive in the Southern California climate. Each plant was carefully selected to complement the library’s eco-friendly LEED Silver-certified design, contributing to water conservation and the City’s Climate Action Plan goals.

Beyond aesthetics, our work supports long-term environmental stewardship. The advanced irrigation system we installed ensures efficient water use, reducing waste while maintaining a lush and vibrant landscape. By seamlessly integrating greenery into the library’s modern design, we’ve helped create a space where the community can gather, reflect, and grow in harmony with nature.

For Coast Landscaping, this project represents more than just landscaping—it’s about leaving a legacy of beauty and sustainability for future generations to enjoy.
